Some systems of power were never written into law; they were written into symbol, ritual, and structure, deliberately kept just out of common reach. Goldmind includes Esoteric Philosophy because real power has always operated on two levels: the visible (laws, markets, institutions) and the hidden (the principles those visible systems were quietly built on top of). This pillar isn’t about mysticism for its own sake; it’s about studying the operating systems underneath the operating systems.

Ancient Egyptian (Kemetic) thought predates and likely influenced much of what’s later credited to Greek philosophy.
Several Greek philosophers, including figures associated with Hermeticism’s later naming, are documented to have studied in Egypt before developing ideas widely taught as originally Greek. The Hermetic tradition itself, the body of philosophical and esoteric texts often called the Hermetica, claims Egyptian origin through the figure of Hermes Trismegistus, who scholars largely connect to the Egyptian god Thoth, god of wisdom and writing.

The “Seven Hermetic Principles” function less as religion and more as a framework for cause-and-effect thinking.
Popularized in the early 1900s text “The Kybalion,” principles like Mentalism (“the All is Mind”), Correspondence (“as above, so below”), and Cause and Effect are presented as universal operating laws. These frameworks, regardless of one’s metaphysical beliefs, function practically as mental models for understanding how systems (financial, social, personal) tend to mirror patterns across scale.

Numerology and symbolic systems were historically tools of literacy and record-keeping, not just mysticism.
In societies without widespread written literacy among the general population, number and symbol systems (sacred geometry, gematria-style letter-number correspondences in multiple traditions) served as compressed information storage. Meaning was layered into form, accessible to those trained to read it, in eras when written language itself was a controlled resource.

Secret and fraternal societies played a documented, often overlooked role in Black institution-building.
Black Freemasonry (the Prince Hall tradition, dating to the late 1700s) and other fraternal and sororal organizations functioned as networks for mutual aid, leadership development, and capital pooling specifically because Black Americans were excluded from mainstream institutions, esoteric tradition and economic self-sufficiency, again, sharing the same building.

“As above, so below” has a direct modern parallel in systems thinking and fractal mathematics.
The ancient correspondence principle, that patterns at one scale repeat at other scales, has a documented modern echo in fractal geometry and complex systems theory, where small-scale patterns (a single bad habit, a single corrupt local policy) are shown to replicate at larger scales (a culture’s collective health, a nation’s institutional behavior) in mathematically describable ways.
